Some accidents are more costly than others

A $77,615 bottle of Clos de Griffier Vieux cognac has been accidentally shattered by a clumsy patron at the Playboy Club in London.  The bottle, dating back to 1788, had been brought out after the customer ordered two glasses and requested to see it.  The two glasses alone cost nearly $8,000.  As the customer stood up, the bottle went flying ~ and the rest… is history.  Or was history.

That bottle was supposed to be used this week to set a new Guinness World Record for creating the most expensive cocktail.  Mixologist Salvatore Calabrese, who himself possesses an antique spirits collection valued at over a million dollars, was to be the one creating the drink and said this about the incident: “We all just froze, then it sunk in. I’ve been heartbroken. Not because of the value of the bottle, but because it is a piece of history that has been lost.”  Calabrese later went on to joke about the accident, Tweeting that the cognac running down his floor now makes the floor of his bar the most expensive bar floor in the world.
