ESPN’s ’30 for 30′ series will take on John Spano and Islanders Ownership Saga
Keyword: espn, new york islanders, ownership saga

If you aren’t familiar with ESPN’s 30 for 30, it is a documentary series that covers all different monumental moments in sports both good and bad. In this up and coming episode directed by local boy and HBO’s Entourage star Kevin Connolly, they will tackle what is probably the most infamous moments in potential-NHL-owner history.

Spano was the young businessman who conned his way into (briefly) purchasing the Islanders in 1996. After the 1996-97 season, things hit the fan when payments were missed and checks bounced. Between him and the mismanagement of Mike Milbury this was the demise of the Islanders and in my opinion why they are the team they are today: A struggling youthful team with a new owner with great intentions but who can’t get the trust of local politicians to rebuild the once powerhouse NHL organization.
Much more on this Saga to come and I can’t wait to sit and watch this 30 for 30 episode. Follow us as we learn more about this story.
