Plans for a second team to occupy Toronto are underway

Well Toronto you have done it now, you are trying to be more and more like New York it’s not even funny.  Two teams to occupy Ontario, or are you possibly going to steal the Islanders from us?  Wait could this be the home of the New, Old Phoenix Coyotes?  This news hit Twitter yesterday which revealed that an application of site plans for an NHL-quality arena in Markham, Ontario, will likely be submitted today and could lead to permits to begin building by the fall.

GTA Sports and Entertainment, the company submitting the plans, is going to spend $325 million to build a rink in the greater Toronto area.  Um isn’t Markham only 19 miles from where the Maple Leafs Air Canada Centre is? The TSN report says the hope is that the rink could be completed in time to host the World Junior Championships in 2015.

I don’t think you spend all of this money to just simple host a World Juniors and throw a few concerts, I’ll tell you that much.  This is clearly the beginnings and hope that an NHL team will occupy the arena by 2015 and how convenient that the Islanders contract is up at the Coliseum in 2015.  Coincidence I think NOT.

Although there is still the thought of the Islanders moving to Brooklyn this makes the most sense for Phoenix, great team, great management and will certainly draw the crowds.  We will keep you posted as we learn more on weather or not this deal will go through.
